About Soundscapes

Soundscapes is an immersive and creative audio project, headed by radio maker and storyteller, Merran Winchester. Supported by Creative Art Central and Central Coast Council, the program has been designed to inspire local creatives to deliver new and contemporary work that demonstrates a strong connection to the community and encourages participation and Merran was successfully awarded funding in 2023.

The purpose of Soundscapes is to connect people with stories and immerse them in the beautiful, natural surroundings of the Central Coast whilst promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. Each of the local writers and contributors has created a work to connect the listener with these stunning locations, whilst taking them on an imaginative and immersive sound journey.

As a radio producer, content maker, artist, actor, and community arts worker, Merran brings over two decades of arts experience. With a passion for storytelling and a deep connection with the Central Coast region, Merran knew she wanted to curate a concept that engaged the local community.

“For me, stories are a way that we connect, taking in big ideas and experiences of life and retelling them in a new and exciting way. The project was inspired by a trip to Norah Head. I was excited by the shipwrecks there, the natural beauty, and the history of the place. It just seemed like the perfect location for a theatre performance.

However, I felt that this was limiting, not everyone can experience a live event at the same time. I wanted to create an experience that everyone could enjoy at their leisure. As a radio maker and storyteller myself, I realised it was all in the delivery, and this was how the idea was formed – a way for the community to engage in stories, immersed in nature, but at their convenience.

Each story has been developed by a local creative. They range from writers to musicians, composers, and creators. These stories are all unique in their way, through music, sounds, and the spoken word.

Soundscapes is a fusion of storytelling and nature, and I invite you to experience the magic of this fusion at your own pace as you explore some of the most magical locations across the Central Coast. Happy adventuring!”
